Check in procedures and boarding for Swiss First Class
The pinnacle of luxury within Swiss first class begins when departing from or transferring through the airline’s primary hub, Zurich. Swiss First Class passengers enjoy a range of priority services at the airport, ensuring a premium experience.
Starting your journey or making connections via Zurich
At Zurich Airport, Swiss Airlines offers a dedicated first class check in lounge situated in the Check in 1 area of the main terminal. While more compact, this exclusive space caters particularly well to travellers arriving by car.
Passengers arriving by train have two choices: check their luggage and collect their boarding pass (if not checked online) at Check in 3 near the airport’s train station or take a 10 minute walk to the first class check in lounge.
Arriving at the airport three hours before my 1 p.m. flight, despite having a digital boarding pass and no checked bags, I was eager to explore the check in lounge. However, there were limited signs for those arriving via means other than by car. Entering through the terminal rather than the exterior car entrance, the lounge attendants appeared surprised that I was a first class passenger not arriving by car.
Escorted by an agent who kindly assisted with my carry on bag, I walked a mere minute to the lounge. Swiss Airlines allows passengers to bring two carry on bags weighing up to 8 kilograms (17 pounds) and two checked bags weighing up to 32 kilograms (70 pounds).
Passengers with paid first class fares can carry an extra checked bag, allowing a total of three.
Access to Swiss First Class Lounges
Swiss Airlines offers two distinctive first class lounges at Zurich Airport: the Terminal A lounge, catering to Schengen zone departures, and the Terminal E lounge, renowned for its luxury, serving non Schengen flights, including those bound for the U.S. For Zurich departures, travellers must traverse the Terminal A lounge to access the Terminal E lounge.
I was ascending the escalator towards the Terminal A lounge entrance. A warm welcome greeted me by name as I was efficiently whisked through a private security checkpoint. It reminisced about the experience at the Lufthansa First Class Terminal in Frankfurt, all within a minute.
During my brief 15 minute stay in the Terminal A facility, I explored the compact, serene lounge designed seemingly for transit focused business travellers. The lounge staff noted that guests usually spend a short time here, as there are only eight dining tables, each designed for two people, with limited availability.
Effortless Departure: A Seamless Journey from Limousine Service to Lounge Indulgence
Three minutes before my scheduled van departure, I followed the signs for the limousine service leading to the hallway’s end. Accompanied by another passenger, we descended to a private passport control kiosk, where each clearance took 15 seconds. From there, we were ushered into a Mercedes passenger van a thoughtful touch, as the seats mimicked Swiss aircraft design but were noticeably narrower.
A seven minute drive across the tarmac later, we disembarked the van and rode an elevator. We were graciously welcomed by two highly professional staff members at the entrance of the Terminal E lounge.
Alternatively, an array of a la carte options is available if time is limited (as was my case). Breakfast or brunch options encompass a full English breakfast, eggs Benedict, and made to order omelettes. Lunch and dinner options range from Caesar salad and beef tartare to Zurich style sliced veal and Swiss cheese fondue.
Arriving in Zurich
Upon landing in Zurich with Swiss First Class, a personalised welcome awaits you, followed by transportation to a dedicated private passport control area for connecting flight passengers.
A dedicated escort will accompany you to the lounge (Area A for Schengen departures; Area E for non Schengen).
Upon reaching Zurich as your ultimate stop, you’ll proceed through customs clearance and gain access to an arrivals lounge equipped with a buffet and shower facilities. Operating hours for this lounge are from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Departing from Alternative Airports
When departing from Geneva, Swiss first class travellers can enjoy a modest 650 square foot lounge with a buffet area but no shower facilities.
I am situated at key Star Alliance hubs in the United States, encompassing Chicago, Los Angeles, Newark, San Francisco, and Washington.
Swiss first class passengers can access United’s Polaris lounges.
Swiss first class passengers have access to a dedicated section within the Lufthansa lounge for departures from Boston and New York. Meanwhile, they are entitled to use Miami’s Turkish Airlines lounge facilities.
Boarding
First class passengers must proceed independently to the boarding gate as chauffeur or escort services are not provided for this segment.
First class passengers, alongside HON Circle elite status members, are designated as Group 1 during boarding. Boarding following passengers requiring special assistance. For my flight, boarding commenced five minutes behind the scheduled time.
First Class Comfort and Variations Across Swiss Aircraft Types
In my experience, opting for a seat in Row 2 proves to minimise any disturbances from the forward galley, where flight attendants primarily operate. The immediate space behind the first class comprises a two row business class section. They were followed by the business class galley and lavatories, leading to the central business class cabin. This arrangement ensures minimal disruption in terms of noise, light, or movement between the first and business class cabins.
Six of the eight first class seats were occupied during my flight, and all passengers had upgraded themselves. I discovered this by conversing with them; they were pretty talkative!
The luxurious 22 inch wide Swiss first class seats exude elegance with their minimalist design and exceptional comfort. Featuring built in massage functions and memory foam cushions, the seats boast square patterned upholstery and sleek wood finishes, contributing to an overall sense of sophistication.
Regarding variations among the three aircraft types, the 777 and the A340 outshine the A330 in three aspects, but the A330 has a slight advantage in one area.
Comparing Privacy Features and Storage Options Across Swiss Aircraft Models
The primary and crucial difference is that the 777 and the A340 offer sliding screens that nearly close entirely, providing a heightened sense of privacy. As showcased in my colleague Zach Griff’s photos from his 777 experience.
On the A330 aircraft, passengers benefit from a sliding privacy partition that extends approximately one third of the way across the suite’s opening. However, this partition must be retracted during taxi, takeoff, and landing.
A significant distinction between the 777/A340 and the A330 lies in the presence of a private wardrobe embedded within the seat’s wall on the former. At the same time, the A330 requires crew assistance to stow any hanging items in the galley.
While a rectangular, dimmable accent lamp adds elegance to the seat, its placement can be inconvenient, obstructing armrest usage.
Facilities and Offerings in Swiss First Class
Swiss’ 777s and A340s stand out over the A330 regarding their first class entertainment screens. The screens, fixed into place on the preceding seatback or bulkhead, measure 32 inches, whereas those on the A330 are notably smaller at 23 inches diagonally. The suite’s size makes the screen challenging to reach, even if it were a touchscreen.
The entertainment options offer a selection of over 200 movies and 250 TV shows. However, the assortment could have been better. Most recently released movies ranged from three to 12 months old, and there were only seven lesser known TV series in both the comedy and drama genres.
For a first class experience, consider a premium remote control with a touchscreen. However, the remote provided was similar to what you might find in the economy, featuring basic buttons. It was placed in a small side compartment beside the user friendly seat controls, an AC power outlet, and a USB A charging port.
Luxury fashion brand Bally curated the amenity kit with Soeder cosmetics, toothpaste, a toothbrush, socks, earplugs, and tissues. The inclusion of Ricola throat relief drops was a thoughtful Swiss touch, which I appreciated.
The A330 features only one compact bathroom, similar in size to those found in economy, situated at the front of the cabin. It differs from Swiss Boeing 777s, which offer two bathrooms, one more spacious than the other.
Despite limited restroom options, the presence of reusable towels instead of disposable ones was a positive aspect. Furthermore, the bathroom contains Soeder hand cream, soap, and facial spray.
Swiss First Class Culinary Delights: A Gourmet Journey from Boarding to Landing
Upon boarding, I received a welcoming glass of crisp Laurent Perrier Grand Siecle Champagne, two Lindt chocolates, and a delightful serving of warmed cashew nuts with basil, a fantastic introduction to the journey.
Initially, I believed I received the comprehensive food and beverage menus. However, I later learned that a separate prelanding meal menu would be provided later in the flight. However, a minor inconvenience, having access to all meal options at the outset, would have facilitated better meal selections.
For travellers in Swiss first class, there’s an option to pre order meals online up to 24 hours before departure. Unfortunately, I couldn’t utilise this service because I accepted the first class upgrade after the 24 hour check in mark.
During long haul flights from Zurich, passengers can select the five course “Taste of Switzerland” dining experience. This rotating menu highlights regional and seasonal specialities complemented by fine wines. This culinary delight is also available in the Terminal E lounge pre flight.
Service in Swiss first class operates on a dine on demand basis, offering the flexibility to indulge at any time and to any extent desired. On my flight, the appetiser selection featured:
Balik salmon fillet
Trout tartare caviar
Meat sampling platter
Salad of endive with preserved pear and roasted walnuts.
Lobster bisque with ricotta gnocchi
For the main course, options included:
Veal fillet with truffle sauce
Chicken breast with herb sauce
Miso marinated perch with port wine sauce
Vegetable tikka masala
Opting for four appetisers and a main course, the service promptly commenced merely 10 minutes after takeoff. The dining experience resonated with the sophistication of a high end restaurant, characterised by impeccable tableware and presentation. The bread basket, offering warm white, multigrain, and whole wheat rolls served with creamy butter, further enhanced the meal.
Exceptional Service and Noteworthy Interactions in Swiss First Class
Throughout my journey, I encountered a consistently warm and professional approach from almost every Swiss employee, from check in until disembarkation. The cabin crew went above and beyond by proactively suggesting wine pairings pro, viding chocolate ass, listing in making the bed, and inquiring if I wished to be awakened for the pre arrival meal. Whenever I needed extra water or a snack, they responded promptly to my requests when I pressed the attendant button.
Reportedly, on Swiss flights, the pilot usually greets each first class passenger, but in this case, the pilot did not come through to greet passengers in first class, which is worth noting. Given our departure delay from Zurich, it’s plausible that this customary interaction didn’t occur on this particular flight.
Shortly before landing, the purser hurried through the cabin to thank each passenger for choosing Swiss. While appreciative, the gesture felt impersonal from a crew member with whom I hadn’t interacted during the flight. It would have felt more personal if the purser had greeted passengers upon boarding or after takeoff or if one of the crew members dedicated to the first class cabin had delivered the farewell message.
