Travel Photography 101: Capture the Magic

You don't need a $5,000 camera to take amazing travel photos. The best camera is the one you have with you—usually your smartphone.

Chase the Light

Everything is about lighting. The "Golden Hour"—the hour after sunrise and the hour before sunset—provides soft, warm light that makes everything look better. Avoid shooting at high noon when shadows are harsh.

The Rule of Thirds

Turn on the grid lines on your phone camera. Instead of putting your subject dead center, place them along one of the lines or at an intersection. It instantly makes your photo more dynamic.

Tell a Story

Don't just photograph landmarks. Photograph people (with permission), details, textures, and food. A picture of a steaming bowl of noodles can transport you back more effectively than a generic shot of a monument.

Patience is Key

Wait for the tourist to walk out of the frame. Wait for the bird to fly past. Wait for the light to hit the building just right. Great photos take time.

Remember to put the camera down sometimes and just look with your eyes.
